A report on the
SCS Multisport Iron Distance Wisconsin Training Camp 2006

The first annual Iron Distance training camp was a hit. Five Ironman triathletes participated in the event. The camp was held in Madison, Wisconsin and was geared to individuals training for Ironman Wisconsin. Participants were able to swim, bike, and run on the actual course.

Day One: Campers and coaches went for a 2 hr ride in and around Madison followed by a 30 min open water swim in beautiful Monona Lake. Athletes were then treated to an educational seminar pertaining to Ironman registration, gear, and equipment needs. The night ended with a great dinner and a few laughs at an Italian Restaurant in downtown Madison.

Day Two: Participants saddled up for a fully supported 112 mile ride on the IM course. Because of construction, athletes and coaches were diverted and added a few miles to the ride. Extreme heat provided extra challenges. All athletes prevailed and enjoyed the day. Some athletes capped the day off with a short transition run.  After some well deserved rest athletes, were again, presented with insightful information. One presentation dealt with Ironman nutritional needs and the other mental aspects of endurance sports. The night ended with pizza and the movie ‘What About Bob”.

Day Three: Campers gathered in the hotel lobby and headed out for 1 loop of the IM course. Freak winds and light rain made for interesting running conditions. The run was a success and capped off s great weekend of training, education, and fun. After a group breakfast consisting of eggs, coffee, oatmeal, fruit, bacon, and, of course, coffee, everyone packed up, said their goodbyes, and headed home.

Thanks to all who participated. We all look forward to next year!!!
